PROGRESSIVE SESSION CLASSES

Circus is fun! Circus is exciting! But circus also takes lots of hard work and persistence. In order to progress in skill level and get you to the really fun part of circus, consistent practice and exposure to the basic techniques is essential. This is why we offer most of our classes in the form of progressive sessions, so that we can get to know you and work with you to get you from where you are at to where you want to be. So join in the fun! No matter what level you are at we have just the class for you. 

Progressive session classes are broken down into three categories:

 

Progressive session classes are broken down into three levels starting from Foundations, moving on to Vocabulary, and finally Lab. Please note that the completion of a session does not guarantee that you will be ready to move up to the next level, instead our classes are designed to continue to grow your skill until you are able to master the prerequisites for the next level.

 

 

FOUNDATIONS - Foundations classes will teach you the bare bones of each discipline. We will focus on strengthening specific areas of your body relevant to that discipline and provide you will all of the foundational tools to help you progress further, faster and safer. No previous experience is necessary but you must have general body awareness and no significant mobility restrictions.

 

VOCABULARY - Vocabulary classes are for those who have previous experience in that specific discipline. This is where you will learn a variety of skills and gain confidence to begin linking movements together. There are prerequisites you must meet before you register for Vocabulary classes.

 

LAB - Lab classes are for those who have an in-depth understanding of a specific discipline and are working towards free movement and creation in their craft. 

There are specific prerequisites that must be met in order to register for Lab classes.

Run away with the circus! Circus is strongly rooted in community, and Circus Troupe is all about building a circus together with your peers. In this class we will begin down the path of developing an act by learning stagecraft (stage-presence and theatre), working together in group disciplines as well as exploring various disciplines to encourage students to hone in on specializing their discipline. Students will build trust with each other, develop their circus skills, and have loads of fun! So find your inner performer and dive into the world of circus.

It is not required for those taking the class to be registered in other classes, however we do encourage it as it will allow you to further delve into your discipline of choice


Prerequisites: general body awareness without any significant mobility limitations, and a willingness to be challenged

HANDSTAND FOUNDATIONS:

Handstands are fun and accessible and with a little bit of persistence open up a whole new world of movement possibilities. The foundations class will prepare your body, shoulders, and wrists to work towards your handstand. We will focus on opening the shoulders to be able to hold your body-weight without injury, as well as developing core strength and balance. Handstands truly are a great practice to invest in. Join us and start seeing the world from upside-down!

Ready to take your handstand practice to the next level? In this class we will explore the nuances of mastering one’s own balance through alignment, positioning, strength, and posture. This is the perfect class for those with an existing yoga handstand practice or anyone looking to unlock the mysteries of balancing an unassisted handstand. Those looking to further their development of partner acrobatics and hand to hand are encouraged to participate.


Prerequisites: all students new to our studio are required to first take Handstand Foundations to learn the basics of our circus handstand vocabulary

HANDSTAND LAB:

This class is designed to challenge those with an existing handstand practice by pushing you to find the edge of your balance and expand your repertoire of ways to balance in a handstand. You should have a solid unassisted handstand and be beginning to work progressions towards a one arm handstand.


Prerequisites: Handstand Foundations and Handstand Vocabulary classes are required prior to registration in the Handstand Lab class in order to learn and integrate our style of handstand technique. Please contact us if you feel that this class is right for you

TUMBLING

TUMBLING VOCABULARY:

 

Take your tumbling skills to the next level! This class will continue to break down body mechanics and positions which are foundational to dynamic tumbling skills and work towards refining your technique. You will continue to work towards developing your spatial awareness with protected falls and landings and grow your confidence to get you flipping in no time!


Prerequisites: bridge, cartwheel, kick to handstand in free space comfortably, dive roll, jump full turn

HAND TO HAND

 

HAND TO HAND VOCABULARY:

Hand to hand the discipline, not to be confused with the specific skill referred to as hand to hand, is an awe-inspiring discipline which involves the base tossing and balancing the flyer in very complex acrobatic movements. Because of the precise nature of this discipline and the fact it is practiced by two acrobats, a solid foundation of trust is essential to pursue a successful hand to hand practice.

 

*A partner is required to register for this class, however if you do not have one please contact us and we will do our best to play matchmaker for you!

Prerequisites:

Bases and flyers: 15-second handstand against a wall, some exposure to basic partner acrobatics. Registration in a handstand class is strongly encouraged

HAND TO HAND LAB:

Hand to hand the discipline, not to be confused with the specific skill referred to as hand to hand, is an awe-inspiring discipline which involves the base tossing and balancing the flyer in very complex acrobatic movements. This class will taking skills higher and refining technique of hand to hand the skill along with many other skills. Because of the precise nature of this discipline and the fact it is practiced by two acrobats, a solid foundation of trust is essential to pursue a successful hand to hand practice.


Prerequisites: flyers: able to jump into a balanced straddle handstand, 30 second handstand against the wall, high side star, standing foot to hand. Flyers must have previously taken or are currently registered in a handstand class
Bases: high side star, standing foot to hand. Bases are strongly encouraged to also have a strong handstand practice and/or are registered in a handstand class

ICARIAN

ICARIAN ALL LEVELS:

Icarian is the fun and dynamic practice of L-base popping! Different from Acro Yoga pops, Icarian involves a full release of contact in the air before the base catches the flyer. This class will focus on building strength, precision, timing and trust and is great for calibrated pairs looking to take their partner acrobatic practice to the next level.

 

Prerequisites: flyers - previous exposure to Acro Yoga with confidence flying basic transitions

bases: previous exposure to Acro Yoga with enough hamstring flexibility to L-base with straight legs

CHINESE POLE

CHINESE POLE FOUNDATIONS:

Chinese pole is an acrobatic apparatus that allows you to combine your strength, endurance and acrobatic agility. Think of it as a mixture of pole dance technique, rock climbing and acrobatics, all combined together into an awe-inspiring discipline. If you have done pole dance before, the difference with this type of pole is that it has a rubber coating and does not rotate. In this class you will learn the basic Chinese pole climbs, holds and more. Don’t delay, space is very limited for this class!

 

Prerequisites: Five second bent arm hold, a hanging pike leg lift, a forward roll, and are comfortable being upside-down

AERIAL SILKS

SILKS FOUNDATIONS:

Aerial silks is a very elegant and visual apparatus which involves the acrobat creating a variety of knots and wraps in fabric suspended from the ceiling. In the foundations class you will be introduced to the basic climbs, knots and wraps as well as build up your strength and familiarity with the apparatus. Let's get you soaring!

 

Prerequisites: previous exposure to activities requiring moderate upper body strength (if you are interested in aerial silks but aren’t sure you meet the prerequisites, check out our aerial hammock class!)

SILKS VOCABULARY:

Once you complete the silks foundation course and feel competent at the prerequisites listed below, you will move to the Vocabulary class! This is where you will stay for some time to build up your "vocabulary" of skills. You will use the foundational postures to learn new tricks and get you flying even higher! If you have previous experience with aerial silks and meet the prerequisites then this class is also for you.

Once you have mastered the basics and built up a solid repertoire of skills, you are ready to move up to the Lab class. Aerial silks lab takes your practice to the next level where you will be able to find freedom in your movements and begin creating sequences through exploration and guidance. If you have previous experience with aerial silks and meet the prerequisites then this class is for you.

Prerequisites: X-cross back, double star drop, hipkey, slack drop, triple falling angel and are able to straddle invert cleanly with straight legs.

Prerequisites: 10 second bent arm hang, single knee hang, able to invert with straight legs and can get up onto a raised hoop without difficulty, back balance, and are comfortable with skills on the top of the hoop

ACRO YOGA FOUNDATIONS:

 

Acro Yoga is the practice of L-basing, where one partner lies on their back (the base) and lifts the other partner into the air (flyer). The foundations class will focus on static postures and an introduction to the concept of transitions and washing-machines. Acro Yoga is a fun and welcoming practice that will have you improving your flexibility and stability without even noticing!


Prerequisites: general body awareness without any significant mobility limitations

ACRO YOGA INTERMEDIATE:

Acro Yoga is the practice of L-basing, where one partner lies on their back (the base) and lifts the other partner into the air (flyer). Intermediate class is for those who have some experience with Acro Yoga and are looking for even more of a challenge. You will be introduced to more complex transitions to help you refine and build the skills that allow your acro yoga practice to become fluid and stable. This class will vary each week, spanning from foot to hand, hand to hand, washing machines, slackro, shoulderstands, stars, and more. No partner required

ACROYOGA PRACTICE

Feel connected and capable through Acro Yoga!


Looking for a way to connect with others, and improve your physical and mental health? You’ve tried a class and been to the Acro Yoga jams but can’t remember what you’ve learned or want to refine your practice?
This early-morning practice will kick-start your whole day and give you the chance to really hone in on the skills you have been learning and solidify them in your mind and body.
Rather than a class, this will be an open format where you can pick what you want to practice and support others to do the same. Krista is available during the practice time for support or questions.

Juggle jams are a great opportunity to collaborate with your fellow community of jugglers. They also provide a fun learning environment for anyone wanting to learn, share and practice juggling basics and skills in a fun, comfortable environment.

The jams are mostly self-directed, however, basic 3-ball juggling instruction will be provided for beginners as well as light facilitation providing optional ideas and collaborative games.

All levels of experience welcome, beginners strongly encouraged!
