Open Training

Available for students aged 16 and older.

Open Training at Island Circus Space

Open trainings are non-instructional, open gym time for students over the age of 16. This time can be used for training outside of our scheduled classes. The use of the space will be supervised by a member of our open training host team, however we ask that you only practice what you know and feel confident executing without assistance.

Aerial points are available to current students and circus artists with prior training. Floor space and other equipment is welcome for everyone to use. If this is your first time booking at Island Circus Space, please reach out to confirm your prior experience before attending the training.

Equipment available for use:

  • Aerial rigging equipment: Hammock, Silks, Hoop (36-40-inch), Aerial Rope, Aerial Strap, Trapeze

  • Juggling and other flow arts props, hula hoops

  • A variety of kettlebells, dumbbells, grip slam balls

  • Handstand canes, handstands blocks, Feetup Stand

  • Yoga mats, blocks, bolsters, foam rollers

  • Straps, sliders, bands

  • Acro wedges

  • Stall bar

  • Cyr wheel, unicycle (for specified open trainings only)

Pre-registration is highly recommended, especially if you can't be there at the start time. If there are no sign ups, the host will leave shortly after the start time.

  • These open trainings have 6 aerial points available for use, as well as loft space for any other ground disciplines and/or conditioning. All are welcome.

    If more than 6 people are signed up, the aerial points may need to be shared amongst multiple trainees.

  •  This open training is designed for 1-2 aerialists to use the centre/middle point apparatus. The remaining spots allocated can be used for ground disciplines or conditioning training in the loft.

  • An open training for those who have previous experience with cyr wheel, or are currently taking a class. There is no room for aerial point access during this open training.

  • This open training is designed for 2-4 aerialists to use multiple aerial points. The remaining spots allocated can be used for ground disciplines or conditioning training in the loft.

  • This open training is available for practicing handstands and other ground disciplines as well as conditioning.

  • For those who have previous experience with unicycling. Unicycles provided.  There is no room for aerial point access during this open training.

  • Island Circus Space will be hosting the established Sunday acro & movement jams. Perfect for acro, handstands, juggling, flow arts and more!


    Acro & movement jams offer a great opportunity to practice skills you have been working on or to get creative and find something new. Jams are self-directed and no instruction is provided therefore we require that everyone use accurate self assessment to keep yourself and everyone around you safe and happy.

  • Specific prerequisites required:

    • Clean step in and out of 2 High

    • 2-3 clean and different entries to Foot to hand down low

    • Jump and float (bunny hop - attempt) into H2H down low

    • Confident jump into thigh-stand and jump to reverse thigh-stand.

    • 10 sec clean shoulder stand down low

    • Solo: straddle up and hold handstand 1-3 sec (all students), headstand 10 sec/solid hold in tuck/straddle/straight, clean cartwheel, clean forward roll feet together start and end in straight stand

    • Attend with regular training partner(s) — attendees must reach out on their own accord to those that they wish to work with during this time and ensure all parties are in agreement with the arrangement, including those pulling lines 

    • Only those with Rigging Sign-offs can pull lines
